I have been producing sculptures using wood material, based on the theme of man's essenterial, such as the inner and outer aspects in his mind. Attracted by the strange energy of wood, I treasure what its appeal to my sense, such as color, smell, sound, or touch. At my solo exhibition (1997) entitled "Yellow Link," I showed a group of wood sculptures and some reliefs made of wood chips produced from chainsawing work for the group sculptures. Through those exhibits symbolically using the color yellow as a positive image, I tried to express contradictory aspects between the present situation in our society with much stress and the dreams and hopes in our minds. I also tried to express the relationship between nature and humans how we associate, or how we should associate, with nature. Currently, I have been nursing a conception that I call "MEMORY OF THE EARTH". The basic premise of this conception is placed on nature near at hand. The idea starts from "seeing the earth." Then, through wood, which is rooted in the earth, I will try to represent contrastive worlds between the earth and the underground, as well as to give a new view on the relationship between humans (or society) and nature. I wish to materialize this conception not only by placing myself in several different natural circumstances but also by having various viewpoints on production, including making a body of works as a series, not merely making single and separate works.
